Texas Slasher Fantasized About Attack

Posted:

(CBS News) Two college students are in critical condition after another student went on a stabbing rampage at Lone Star Community College in Cypress, Texas, on Tuesday, officials say. A dozen others were also wounded.

Quick, now charged with three counts of aggravated assault, told police just hours after the stabbings that he had fantasized about stabbing people to death since he was in elementary school, saying he only stopped slashing people because his knife had broken.

The attack began around 11:00 Tuesday morning as students filled the hallways of the Health and Sciences Building at the community college near Houston.

Witness Michael Chalfan told CBS affiliate station KHOU, "He had a sinister look on his face, kind of like a smile and a satisfaction grin."

Onlookers say Quick began to race down the corridor, slashing people at random with a razor-like knife, reaching for the face and neck.

The college sent out an alert, warning those on campus to stay inside or stay away. Still, students made their way toward the crime scene as victims poured out of the building.

One witness said of a victim, "she still had a blade sticking out of her cheek."

Quick was making his way to a second building when Eric Betrand -- an ex-Marine and current Lone Star student -- saw the commotion. Betrand said, "We saw a girl coming down the stairs. She was holding her neck, and she was bleeding a lot out of her neck."

Betrand spotted Quick. Along with three other students he began sprinting after him. One managed to grab Quick's backpack, yank him to the ground, and Betrand helped to subdue him. Betrand recalled, "Soon as he hit the ground, he put his hands up and he said, 'I give up! I give up!'"

Police arrived moments later to handcuff Quick.

Campus was closed for the rest of the day as 12 of the 14 injured were taken to local hospitals; four victims were transported to a nearby trauma unit.

Classes at Lone Star Community College are scheduled to resume Wednesday.

In Cypress, one student called the Quick, "eccentric, but friendly." Quick is scheduled to be in court on Thursday.
