Festivelo, a celebration of biking took place Sunday at Parc San Souci. The event was hosted by Bike Lafayette, Trail, and the Lafayette Consolidated Government. Throughout the day several riding events and defense courses were available.
But the goal of the first and hopefully annual festival, is to raise awareness about cyclist safety, and the importance of sharing the road.
There is a growing number of cyclists, from the park-rider, to the avid racer, to the grocery getter, and they all agree, Louisiana could use more bike trails.
With the first bike festival and many giving their full support, an equal roadway and safe place for cyclists could soon follow.
The Lafayette Metropolitan Planning Board (which is comprised of the City-Parish Council members) voted to approve a goal of dedicating 10% of annual Urban Systems Funds for bicycle and pedestrian improvements within the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) study area. (Note: all funds used will require a local match of 20%).
