The head of Louisiana's Department of Natural Resources has named 13 scientists and other experts to serve on a commission to determine the long-term stability of the area around the sinkhole in Assumption Parish.
Members of the panel will set up scientific benchmarks and determine when they have been met, signaling a safe return for residents. On Friday, work was halted in the area because of concerns about the growing sinkhole and its instability.
The sinkhole has forced 350 residents to evacuate the area. It is believed to have been caused by a failed Texas Brine company cavern.
