The Lafayette Parish school board has voted to cut the payroll of a school system employee, whose employment has been the at the center of a longstanding debate.
The board's vote last night eliminates the budget for the special assistant in facilities and maintenance position.
Dr. Cooper about a year ago filled the position with a person he knew didn't have the required high school diploma.
School board member Tehmi Chassion brought it the school board's attention.
Board member Mark Babineaux was one five who voted to eliminate the budget line item last night. Babineaux says the board may not has the authority to hire and fire...but the board can regulate how money is spent.
"So, he had an obligation to come clean with the board and let them know, but also he had an obligation according to law and by policy to hire according to perimeters set by the board; that was violated."
The school system's chief financial officer says the budget line item for the position is $75,903.
