Barge separated from tug wreckage in La. bayou

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The Coast Guard says a salvage company has separated a barge carrying tens of thousands of gallons of oil from the wreckage of a tugboat that struck a gas pipeline in a coastal Louisiana bayou, triggering a massive fire.

Workers were monitoring the barge Friday to prepare for salvage operations once the fire that broke out Tuesday is extinguished.

Meanwhile, pipeline owner Chevron has started flaring the pipeline in a controlled burn designed to rid the line of residual gas.

The Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the crash, which injured four people, one critically, about 30 miles south of New Orleans.

The barge was carrying 92,000 gallons of oil. Coast Guard Petty Officer Carlos Vega says none of the oil has spilled.
