On March 12, 2013, Port Barre police received a complaint of a home burglary which occurred on 100 block of Lydia Street. The caller told police that her cousin broke into her home while she was gone and stole jewelry, kitchen ware, an I-phone with charger and case and a bottle of prescription medicine. Earlier that day, the complainant hired her cousin, Kenneth Bretchel and his friend, Roger Burleson, to rake leaves in her yard. She returned home later to find the back door of her home had been broken into and the items missing.
She contacted Bretchel and he eventually admitted he and Burleson committed burglary. The complainant was able to talk Bretchel in to returning most of the items. In which he drove by her home and threw a bag containing the items in her driveway, then drove off. Police were able to catch up with him the next morning and placed him in custody.
On March 14, 2013, police located Burelson at his home in Opelousas. Burleson was arrested and brought to the Port Barre jail. Both suspects were booked on the charges home burglary and held on a $7500 bond.
