Immigration Reform Talk

Posted:

On the national scene, law makers on Capitol Hill are debating immigration reform and local farmers who depend on migrant workers are concerned about the possible outcome. Two proposals are under consideration. One from a group of bi-partisan senators, and another from President Barack Obama. The senate proposal includes the hopes of creating a smart foreign labor program. President Obama's version does not. Here in Louisiana the LSU AG Center agrees the current system of documenting workers needs to be changed and simplified otherwise it could lead to a diminished pool of laborers or farmers hiring illegal workers.

"Some of them have mentioned that it's almost getting to the point with all the new rules and regulations they have to follow that they may have to try that route and they just pay the fine" says LSU's Barrette Courville.

In this report, one local farmer talks about his concerns regarding immigration.
