Cajuns Rally Late but Fall to Illinois State in Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns softball team fell to Illinois State, 4-3, early Sunday morning at the Diamond Nine Citrus Classic in Orlando. They finished the Classic with a 2-3 record, falling to 15-5 on the season with two more non-conference contests before conference play starts.

The Cajuns took an early lead with two runs in the second inning. They loaded the bases with no outs and followed it up with back-to-back fly outs before Natalie Fernandez and Brianna Cherry hit RBI singles to take a 2-0 lead.

Illinois State took the lead in the bottom of the fourth after a two-run home run by Elizabeth Kay, and an RBI single by Kolby Hoffman after an error.

That would be the day for Wallace who yielded to Kristin Martinez out of the bullpen. Wallace tossed 4.0 innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits and two walks, while striking out four batters. Wallace would be charged with the loss and falls to 8-3 on the season.

Martinez went the rest of the way, tossing 2.0 innings and allowed one run on three hits while striking out three.

The Red Birds added one more run in the fifth to extend their lead to 4-2.

Matte Haack led off the sixth inning with her first triple of the season, over the right fielders head. Sarah Draheim drove her home in the next at-bat with a ground out to second, cutting the lead to one before the inning ended.

UL pressured in the seventh inning, but came up short, dropping the game 4-3.

Brianna Cherry had a two-hit game for the Cajuns, going 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI.

The Cajuns will now look towards Wednesday's doubleheader at Texas. First pitch for game one of the doubleheader is slated for 5:00 P.M. on Wednesday, March 6 in Austin. The Cajuns will return home for the weekend to start conference play against Western Kentucky with a doubleheader on Saturday.
