Lafayette and Carencro Fire Departments responded to an early morning house fire at 112 Collins Street in Carencro. Fire officials received the call at 5:41 this morning. When firefighters arrived, heavy smoke was coming from the eaves and roof of the single family dwelling. Shortly afterwards, the fire vented through the roof of the structure.
Firefighters forced entry to the dwelling. During an initial search of the interior, firefighters found a male occupant in the bedroom. The fire victim was pronounced dead on the scene by the Lafayette Parish Coroner's office. Next of kin has been notified.
The victim was identified as Shawn Woods, 28 years old. He lived at the resident with his father, James Harris. Mr. Harris was not home at the time of the fire. No other injuries were reported. The cause of death is still under investigation.
Fire investigators examined the dwelling. The structure sustained heavy fire damage to the attic and roof area. The interior of the dwelling sustained moderate fire and smoke damage. There were no smoke detectors in the dwelling.
