Last night, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a three vehicle crash on US Highway 190 west of Basile.
According to investigating Troopers, on February 23, 2013, at 7:54 p.m., 26-year-old Dwayne Griffin of Kinder was driving a 2004 Chevrolet truck west on US Highway 190. For reasons still under investigation, Griffin crossed the centerline and struck a 2008 Dodge truck, driven by 32-year-old Rogelio Rico of Elton. After striking Rico's vehicle, Griffin's vehicle struck a 2003 Lincoln SUV driven by 23-year-old Isidro Mendoza of Ville Platte.
Griffin was unrestrained and was transported to a local hospital. Shortly after arriving at the hospital, Griffin succumbed to his injuries. Rico, a passenger in his vehicle, and Mendoza were all restrained and sustained minor injuries.
It is unknown if impairment was a factor in this crash; however, toxicology samples have been obtained and will be submitted to the State Police Crime Lab for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
Troopers remind drivers and occupants that State Law requires everyone riding in a motor vehicle to be properly retrained. While wearing a seat belt will not save you in every crash, it will greatly reduce your risk of injury in most crashes.
