LONG BEACH, Calif., Feb. 21, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Mercedes-Benz Research & Development North America, Inc. (MBRDNA) today held the official grand opening of its modernized and expanded Long Beach TechCenter located at 4035 Via Oro Ave., Long Beach, CA.  In attendance were Prof. Herbert Kohler, Daimler Vice President Group Research & Sustainability, Dr. Bernd Fischer, Los Angeles German Consul General, MBRDNA executive management, MBUSA colleagues, Mercedes Benz Dealers, and city officials.  The expansion will enable the facility to support Daimler's strong growth in the U.S. market while ensuring that customers' expectations with respect to the quality and durability of their vehicles are met.  The facility also plays a key role in supporting the Mercedes-Benz zero-emissions alternative drivetrain program.

This marks the second expansion of the facility which began operation back in 1997.  The recent expansion provides the TechCenter with nearly 7,500 square feet of additional space allowing it to keep up with the growing demand for Mercedes-Benz vehicles which are achieving their highest volumes ever in the U.S. market.

The expanded building allows MBRDNA to better meet US-specific R&D demands for emission testing, powertrain engineering, durability engineering, and overall vehicle testing. Virtually every area of the facility has been updated, including the workshop to provide increased flexibility and efficiencies in all testing (e.g.  EPA 5cycle fuel economy emission tests).  The highly versatile and experienced staff along with state-of-the-art testing equipment ensures that the TechCenter can provide unsurpassed testing quality for Daimler AG.

MBRDNA, a part of the Daimler Group and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Daimler North America Corporation, consists of four divisions including Group Research & Advanced Engineering, eDrive & Powertrain, TechCenter and Advanced Design.  Through supporting Daimler R&D, MBRDNA serves a vital role in the Daimler 2020 vision of becoming the top selling luxury brand in the world.
