The spending of your tax dollars may soon be at mercy of a panel of community members. Lafayette Consolidated President Joey Durel wants to put together a Blue Ribbon Committee to re-evaluate the spending of city parish tax dollars.
Lafayette Consolidated President Joey Durel made it clear. The proposed Blue Ribbon Committee will reflect the community it represents. People who understand what it means to put a plan in place. "I think it's hilarious that people don't think we should be planning. They don't go on a vacation without planning; that's how you use money more effectively."
Effective spending is what brought Airport Director Greg Roberts to the public meeting. Roberts says in the future a new terminal will be needed. "The existing terminal was built in the 50's, renovated in the late 60's early 70's. We're maxing out."
Sheriff Mike Neustrom was also at Monday's meeting. Neustrom wants to see a reduction in the duplication of public safety efforts between agencies. "Whatever we do; if it can be done better and cheaper together, I'm for that." Neustrom wants to ensure that there are people on the committee who understand public safety - and the cost of it.
Councilman Brandon Shelvin says the committee will go beyond cookie cutter ideas. Shelvin says his one requirement for the committee is that the people on it - are people who want to see Lafayette succeed. "We want the people on this Blue Ribbon Committee to all have the same mindset; that they all want to see Lafayette be successful." Shelvin says the committee will only make recommendations - the final decision will be left to the council.
