A local grocery store in Abbeville is out over $10,000 thanks to a scam that could have even fooled the police. The owner of Eustis Meaux and Son Grocery Store said one of his loyal customers came in with twelve United States Postal Service money orders, each for $870 dollars, wanting to cash them.
Appearing to be legit, he did. It wasn't until the store owner went to get reimbursed that he found out they were fake. Abbeville Police Detective Stan Suire says the store owner wasn't the only one who was mislead.
"Suire: The suspect claims she had no knowledge they were fake. She applied to be a mystery shopper online. he got it. They sent her checks to cash. She cashed them sent them to manila in the Philippines. She kept some for herself."
