Over two dozen students from all over Vermilion Parish came together last week to discuss a variety of topics including sex and drugs.
Both subjects are controversial when it comes to what should and shouldn't be taught in the classroom. Vermilion parish, like most parishes, offers drug education but not sex education.
In fact, sex education hasn't been taught in Vermilion Parish since the 1990's. Vermilion Parish Superintendent Jerome Puyau says it's an important topic but hard to implement into the current curriculum. Puyau says the state has raised the bar on what students have to learn. Payau is afraid that if schools implemented smaller topics, although important, it would take away from core education.
Superintendent Puyau says Vermilion Parish will be proactive in listening to students and finding ways to address the issue. Guidance counselors say they are available and willing to talk to students if they have any questions on the topics.
