St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Deputies Jason Javier and Matthew Strickland are expected to recover after sustaining gunshots wounds in a shooting in Charenton Saturday morning.

Both are doing well and are in good spirits. Sheriff Mark Hebert expresses his gratitude to the community for the outpouring of support during this time of crisis. He asks for the communities continued prayers for the fallen officer and his family and all of the law enforcement officers out there everyday protecting our families.

Deputy Jason Javier, 23, has been with the St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office for the last two years.

Deputy Matther Strickland, 24, worked briefly for the SMPSO in 2011 and rejoined the department this year in mid January. 

A Chitimacha Police Officer and a civilian were shot to death during the incident that occurred Saturday in Charenton.

The fallen officer has been identified as 52 year old Sgt. Rick Riggenbach. 

The suspect, 48 year old Wilbert Thibodaux is being held in the Iberia Parish jail. He was arrested and charged with two counts of first degree murder, two counts of attempted first degree murder and one count of arson.

The investigation of the shooting has been turned over to Louisiana State Police. No further details are available at this time.
