Monday was a groundbreaking day at Regional Medical Center after they performed the first trans-catheter aortic valve replacement in Acadiana.
This procedure is typically done with open heart surgery. But with new technology, doctors are able to replace the valve by going through a small incision in the leg or left side of the chest. Only three hospitals statewide offer this procedure and Regional Medical Center is the only hospital in Acadiana.
This procedure now opens the door to patients who were once considered high risk or inoperable a chance at a quality life.
