The Diocese of Lafayette honored 88 individuals for their charitable work and strong values, Friday night, at the 27th annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, JR. Mass and award ceremony. Those honored, according to celebrant, Most Rev. Michael Jarrell, are present day examples of the values King exemplified.
"We try to recognize those in our parishes, people who exemplify those values. Those who recognize human dignity and charity to other people."
Jarrell said King's principles are ones that are shared with the Christian faith.
"The principals that he used to reach his conclusions and to foster his activity are principals that are forever. He was one that exemplified love for humanity and for the dignity of human beings"
Religious organization, Black Christian Ministries sponsored the celebration. Director Stephanie Bertrand said those being honored are not only good examples in their community, but make charity and selfless-ness a way of life
"People do things within their church. They've ministered to people in prison, carry out the needs of people who are homeless, and people who actually have a sense of hopelessness."
Fr. Michael Sucharski, Pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church was the homolist for the ceremony.
