No State Minimum Wage - KLFY News 10

No State Minimum Wage

Posted:

A recent report shows the state of Louisiana along with four others have no state set minimum wage that must be paid to workers in private or public jobs.

There are exceptions in federal law that actually allow some employers to pay less than minimum wage. But that doesn't mean most employers can get away with paying less. The legislature has blocked attempts to create a state minimum wage.

But since federal law trumps local laws, the actual minimum is currently is $7.25 an hour...and has been since 2011.

That's a significant rise sine 1972 when the minimum wage was $1.60 an hour.
