Phone scams are on the rise in Acadiana and that has the Better Business Bureau (BBB) on alert.
Over the past several weeks, hundreds of people are reporting that someone from outside the United States has called them claiming they won a sweepstakes. But in order to claim that prize they must first send them money through a cash card. Some scammers even ask for checking account and credit card numbers. The BBB says if you get a phone call from someone you don't know, to hang up and never give out personal information. If you talk to them they may add you to a list. President of the BBB Sharane Gott says that list is made up of people whom the scammer thinks could be influenced in the future. So the scammer sells your number to companies as someone who was engaging. If you have any questions or concerns about this you are urged to call the BBB at 337-981-34-97.
