A section of St. Mary Street will be closed as construction on a roundabout continues in Scott. This leaves travelers searching for alternate routes for the next five months.
The road will be closed off to traffic between Benoit Patin Road and Apollo Road beginning Wednesday, January 2nd. The Department of Transportation and Development and city officials worked on alternate routes for motorists, including a secondary road.
Travelers from Highway 93 will have the choice of accessing Scott by taking a left on Apollo Road, or by taking a right on a new road that connects to the frontage road. Local traffic will have access to I-10 by taking Benoit Patin to Apollo Road. DOTD is urging all truck traffic to use Apollo Road to access US 90.
Chief of Police Chad Leger said motorists should expect delays, especially in the morning on Apollo Road due to the railway.
"Trains come through Scott numerous times during the day. Unfortunately, they come in the morning than any other time during the day, so they should plan to leave 10 to 15 minutes earlier."
With the detours, delays and construction, DOTD assures residents that all businesses will remain open.
"We will maintain those openings. We will have signs put up that will allow traffic to still access those businesses in that area," said Deidra Druilhet, DOTD's Public Information Officer.
City Officials said it's important the motorists understand that Scott will not shut down.
"We have a saying, 'Shop Scott', and we want people to continue to do that. We just want people to be aware that there will be a little delay," Leger explained.
St. Mary Street is expected to re-open by May 1st, 2013.
