Lafayette Church Celebrates Return

For the first time in over two years, parishioners enjoyed mass inside their church instead of a school gymnasium. Our Lady Queen of Peace in Lafayette held their first mass on Christmas Eve, since a fire claimed the church in April of 2010. Fire officials determined a blazed started in the attic, destroying the main structure. Mass had been previously held in the school gymnasium of Truman Elementary.

Father Hampton Davis said they are grateful to everyone that helped them while they were outside of their church.

"This is the greatest Christmas present that our parish has ever received and it's because of incredible generosity from parishioners and amazing people from all over the country, who have heard our plea and helped us lift up our hearts and rebuild our home."

The building, originally constructed in 1975, had to be brought up to code. The church also expanded to accommodate parishioners. Landscaping and the speaker system need to be completed, but Davis said nothing would keep them out any longer.

On Christmas Day, mass will be held at 8am and 11am, and the church's normal mass schedule will resume. On January 1st, the Feast of Mary Mother of God will take place at 2pm.
