The R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl is less than a week away, and excitement is in the air for the UL Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns football team.
Fans flocked to the Cajundome box office Friday to make last minute ticket purchases. Tickets sales come to an end on Monday December 17th at 6pm. Matt Casbon, UL Lafayette Athletic Ticket Manager, said over 20,000 tickets have been sold so far, and he expects to hit the 21,000 mark by the end of the day on Monday.
"We're excited that we were able to offer all of our fans tickets," Casbon began. "Our fans want to have a party, so we have seen orders of 10, 20, 50, all the way up to one order of over 100 tickets."
Every ticket purchased through the Cajundome counts toward the university, and could help the Cajuns receive more bowl invitations.
"They want to establish a bowl history first and foremost; showing other bowls that we can sell tickets and that our fans travel to games. It's a great way to promote the university and its athletic department," said Casbon.
Lafayette City Parish President Joey Durel said the bowl game and the number of tickets sold helps to promote UL Lafayette, all while helping to boost the area's economy.
"It's just an opportunity to bring so much attention to a university that we all know is such an drive for the economy and the whole region."
Durel said the excitement for the bowl does not overshadow the importance of an education from the university; he believes athletics and bowl games give publicity to the university.
"A college's main function is academics and education but there is no greater way for a university to bring attention to itself through athletics, through community pride and support for the university."
Tickets can still be purchased at the Cajundome box office, through the Cajundome Call Center, or online at www.ragincajuns.com.
