State Police are now investigating the officer involved shooting that left a Breaux Bridge teenager dead. The shooting happened around 7:40 Sunday night in the 900 block of Landry Street.
When Breaux Bridge police arrived at the scene, they say 17-year-old Darnesha Harris was driving a 2005 Toyota Corolla toward their unit.
Harris crashed head on with the police unit, then backed up hit a parked car, and struck a bystander. Police then opened fire and struck Harris. The teen was taken to the hospital where she later died.
Many in the community are outraged over the shooting death of Harris. Early Monday morning, they gathered together to speak out. Family members were visibly shaken, including Harris' mother, who was so upset, she was taken to the hospital.
The majority are questioning why the officer shot Harris, including her brother, Dartaniel Lewis, who says his sister was unarmed.
"I understand he had to protect the people, but listen to the people before taking action," said Lewis. "Somebody's life could have been saved."
State Police are investigating the incident and say the officer opened fire following Harris' erratic driving behavior. They say she hit the officer's vehicle, and then backed into a parked car, before hitting a bystander and another parked car.
Trooper Stephen Hammons with Troop I said, "Each officer involved shooting is unique, each one is investigated differently, based on those circumstances we are given."
According to friends and family, Harris was fleeing a fight when officers arrived at the scene.
"They started fighting," said Lewis. "And the women, everyone was just jumping on my sister."
Police are not releasing the officer's name at this time. While many are angry over Harris' death, her brother wants a peaceful ending.
"I just think justice needs to be served and people need to let all the information come together," said Lewis. "Everybody (needs to) hold off and keep cool about the situation."
State police say after their investigation, they'll forward their findings to the District Attorney for further review.
