Salvation Army Delivers Thanksgiving Dinners

In Lafayette, The Salvation Army reached out on Thanksgiving Day. Volunteers of the faith based mission loaded-up the mobile canteen with enough food to serve 500 meals.

Captain August Pillsbury of the Salvation Army is the man in charge. "We got turkey and dressing, green bean casserole, corn, mashed potatoes, gravy, sweet potatoes. We're going right into the neighborhoods. All these volunteers are going to go with us."

Shawniee Jones of Maurice is one of the many volunteers. This is Shawniee's second year going door to door. She says at one point she needed help. "It feels good to give back. To be a part of someone's Thanksgiving and to make them smile and to share the thanks and joy with them."

For these volunteers the gift is actually being given to them. To be able to help someone else - is a gift that's only good when returned. "It's a blessing to see so many people that need and be given too," says Jones.

"This is the 3rd year that we've been doing this. We noticed last year that it was just a wonderful thing for the volunteers and for the people that get the food. So, we're going to continue this and hope that it gets bigger and bigger," says Pillsbury.

The Salvation Army held fundraisers to pay for the food and supplies for the Thanksgiving deliveries.
