Thanksgiving Holiday Travel Precautions

Posted:

Three fatal accidents in Acadiana have officials warning residents to use caution and patience this holiday travel season.

AAA officials said more motorists are expected to hit the road this year, due to a drop in gasoline. They expect Wednesday and Sunday to have the highest traffic volume. State police plan to increase patrols. Trooper Stephen Hammons said they will be looking for impaired and aggressive drivers, as well as those who aren't wearing their seatbelts. Hammons said these situations helped lead to some of the fatal accidents over the course of three days.

"Three families are going to have an empty chair during the Thanksgiving holiday."

Hammons said time can also play a factor in dangerous driving.

"We see people who are in a  hurry and trying to rush to their destinations. Make sure you leave enough time and plan for some delays."

Those who are planning to travel can dial 511 for information about road closures and delays.
