Livingston Approves New Courthouse Bid

Posted: Updated:

LIVINGSTON, La. (AP) - The Livingston Parish Council has approved an $18.4 million bid to construct a new courthouse.

The Advocate reports ( ) the council made the decision Thursday after hearing promises of financial help from the heads of agencies that will occupy the courthouse.

Officials from several agencies have tried for more than a decade to build a courthouse to replace the one constructed in 1941.

District Attorney Scott Perrilloux says a new courthouse is "sorely needed." Perrilloux had complained about a lack of separate space for jurors, defendants and witnesses as well as relatives of victims and defendants.

The council voted 7-0 to accept the bid by Cangelosi Ward Inc., a Baton Rouge firm that was the lowest of nine bidders.
