Last night at the Lafayette Parish School Board meeting, an item was introduced before the board that would create a donation fund called the Lafayette Parish Fund for Excellence in Public Schools. The fund would be open for the community to make monetary donations for specific projects or schools. People can already make donations to individual schools and the district, but this fund will give the donor more control over how their money is spent. Angela Morrison, Director of Community Collaborations and Partnerships, says the idea for the fund came from people in the community "Alumni from Lafayette High want to do a specific project at Lafayette High that deals with athletics, so they've been asking for this opportunity to match their wishes for the school with a fund like this."
The fund would be managed by a third party, Community Foundation of Acadiana. President and CEO of Community Foundation of Acadiana issued this statement:
"This unique collaboration would provide an opportunity to benefit infrastructure, programs and instruction at Lafayette Parish Schools. Generous patrons can also establish and direct separately named Funds, including endowment Funds, to benefit Lafayette Parish schools. "
The School Board must first approve the establishment of the fund at their next meeting on November 28th. At that point, it would be immediately open.
