Elmer's Island Remains Closed Due To Oil

Elmer's Island, the public beachfront on the Gulf of Mexico near Grand Isle, is still closed two months after Hurricane Isaac's waves exposed oil from BP's massive 2010 oil spill.  On Monday, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries reminded the public that the popular beach is closed. The department says oil mats and tar balls along the 230-acre tract of barrier island beachfront need to be cleaned up.  The area remains closed until further notice.  A BP well blew out on April 20, 2010, and caused the sinking of the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig and led to a months-long spill that fouled hundreds of miles of shoreline along the northern Gulf. Some of that oil resurfaced on Elmer's Island after Isaac struck Louisiana at the end of August.
