Lafayette Public Works has its sights set on bridge repairs. The list to qualify for federal funds is due. The program is called Off System Bridge Replacement. Tuesday, the consolidated council will review that list for submission.
Nearly 200 bridges in Lafayette Parish have been inspected for repairs and replacement. Public Works Director Thomas Carroll says the program is about safety. "There are bridges we've gone and found significant problems. In Lafayette parish, over the past few years we had to close bridges."
Carroll says on the Surrey Street Bridge the bearings to straighten the bridge were restored. On the Industrial Parkway Bridge project timber was changed out for concrete. On Robley Drive, the deck panels were starting to shift; that bridge was completely replaced. "Serenity in Youngsville needs to be redone. Railroad Bridge in Carencro needs to be done. There's Barber Road in Broussard," says Carroll.
The Department of Transportation and Development does the inspections. When it comes to doing what needs to be done - that's up to the local government says DOTD
Deidra Lockhart is the information officer for DOTD. Lockhart says her office administers the funds for the bridge replacement program. "If it's a situation where the bridge is in dire need of some type of repair or replacement, we also can go in and close that bridge until that funding can be secured to make the repairs," says Lockhart.
