The St. Landry Parish Sheriff, Bobby Guidroz, is shopping for new real estate. He wants to centralize operations of the Sheriff's Office to one location. Currently, Administration is located on Market St. in downtown Opelousas, but four other departments are located elsewhere. The Detectives department is only down the street, but Narcotics, Cyber Crime and Training operate miles away. "We pretty much have no options here," says Sheriff Guidroz about the location behind the courthouse. He adds, "us moving is going to free up a lot of parking for courthouse employees and people visiting to take care of parish business."
Sights are set on the old Acadiana Preparatory School located near the intersection of US 190 and Hwy I-49. The location would also be convenient because they have access to a major intersection without moving too far from the courthouse. The facility would provide 26,000 sq. ft. of office space, plus a gymnasium for the Training Academy. Sheriff Guidroz has a meeting on Monday to determine the final price and sort out additional details. He says as soon as a purchase agreement is signed, he plans to have inmates begin the cleaning process.
St. Landry Parish will maintain their current building to use for incarceration space. The agreement could be complete sometime next week.
