Founded in 1765 and known as the Mother Church of Acadiana, the Saint Martin de Tours Catholic Church in downtown St. Martinville has long been an iconic monument. Visitors and locals alike have come to the church grounds to worship, admire her beauty and listen to the church bells sing. Recent repairs to the roof and bell tower have silenced her song.
The metal roof must be renovated to strengthen the structural integrity, therefore, seven church bells have been removed from the bell tower. The oldest bell, cast in 1850 will not be reinstalled with the others. Instead it will be placed on display for all to enjoy on the ground. One of the newest bells is being re tuned in Holland. When the construction project to Saint Martin de Tours is complete, a new song will chime down Main St. The projects are expected to be complete by the church's 250th anniversary in 2015.
