Halloween Economics

The National Retail Federation estimates that this year Americans will spend 8 billion dollars on Halloween costumes, candy and décor… But what are the numbers showing so far, locally? The Spirit Halloween Store on Johnston Street in Lafayette opened several days earlier this year and plans to stay open several days later. One of the assistant managers says they haven't had as much business. Traffic has picked up over the past few days and numbers are expected to increase this weekend, but overall things have been slower than last year. Final sales numbers for the store won't be known until several weeks after Halloween.

As far as costumes are concerned, morphsuits and The Avengers characters have been the most popular. They have also received increased requests for pet costumes and infant costumes. While they do not sell pet costumes at Spirit this year, employee Jennifer Woodson, says that might change for 2013, "We don't sell dog costumes, we did the year before, it seems to be a big trend, hopefully next year we will get dog costumes… maybe even cats!"
