NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A New Orleans woman booked with first-degree murder in the deaths of her 3-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter was ordered held without bond during her initial court appearance.
Twenty-three-year-old Chelsea Thornton rubbed her face with her shackled hands as prosecutors described the case against her in a New Orleans courtroom Thursday. Relatives wept as she was led from the courtroom. An attorney representing her declined comment.
Police said the children's paternal grandmother found them dead in a bathtub Wednesday evening.
Thornton was arrested later at a New Orleans hospital where she had gone for treatment of a headache and abdominal pains.
Thornton's mother said her daughter had been treated for bipolar disorder and schizophrenia but had stopped taking her medication months ago.
