Lafayette Parish Halloween Times
Lafayette, LA - Halloween will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 31, 2012, between the hours of 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm, within the City of Lafayette. The Lafayette Police Department has the following recommendations to assure a safe and enjoyable Halloween.
• Choose costumes that are marked flame retardant and add reflective tape or reflectors to darker colored costumes.
• All children should remain under the direct supervision of parents or guardians.
• Carry a flashlight or other illuminant device.
• Have children stay within their own familiar neighborhood and only visit homes they know.
• Adults should inspect all candy prior to the children indulging.
• Give and accept wrapped or packaged candy only.
• Have props such as magic wands and swords constructed out of cardboard rather than metal or wood. This will avoid unnecessary injuries.
• Drive vehicles cautiously in areas where children are trick or treating.
Finally, for those adults that will be attending parties for Halloween, please do not drink and drive. The Lafayette Police Department will be patrolling in the neighborhoods to assure a safe Halloween.

Saint Landry Parish Safe Halloween
Each year the City of Opelousas Tourism Department hosts a fun filled evening of Halloween activities for the community to enjoy. Safe Halloween for Kids at Le Vieux Village provides a safe environment for the children in Opelousas and surrounding areas to not only enjoy trick or treating but also gives them the opportunity to visit each of the homes in the village in search of more treats. In addition to these activities face paintings, fun jumps, and a children's costume contest is scheduled for the evening.
The Safe Halloween for Kids event is made possible with the support of local businesses and organizations that adopt and decorate the houses in Le Vieux Village and hand out treats to the little ghosts and goblins.

St. Mary Parish Halloween Checklist
St. Mary Parish - Trick or Treating parish wide in St. Mary will be observed between the hours of 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm on Halloween night, Wednesday, October 31, 2012. This Halloween it is crucial that you know which houses your children should avoid when trick-or-treating. I invite you to view our website, http://www.sheriffalerts.com/la/stmary, research neighborhoods and addresses that are important to you, and register to receive e-mail notifications on registered sex offenders within proximity of these addresses. The most beneficial aspect of the address monitoring feature is that once your important addresses and e-mail address have been registered, the system will automatically alert you via e-mail when an offender moves within a specified radius of the registered address. Register any and all addresses where your children spend a lot of time; for example friends, grandparents, or babysitter's addresses. Registering for this confidential e-mail alert service allows us to monitor your important addresses for you, thereby keeping you up to date of newly registered offenders and making it unnecessary for you to have to check these addresses daily or even weekly. While visiting our website you can also view and print important safety tips to review with your children. The e-mail notifications and discussing the various safety tips helps increase awareness.
Offenders are not supposed to have their front porch lights on, nor are they supposed to answer the door.
It is the goal of te St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office to provide accurate information to the public regarding the dangers of sexual predators, and to further build community awareness. To help us achieve this goal we utilize OffenderWatch® to manage, monitor the whereabouts, and conduct compliance checks of the registered sex offenders within our community. OffenderWatch® is the nation's leading sex offender management and community notification tool and we began using this software in 2008.
"Community Notification" empowers you with the knowledge that can be used to protect yourself and your family from becoming victims. I firmly believe that the more educated and aware a community is of what and where the dangers lurk, the more success we have with our community notification program.
