Opelousas Police Investigate Traffic Fatality


Early Sunday morning just prior to the 3:00am hour, the Opelousas Police Department responded to a traffic crash on the northbound lanes of Interstate 49 near mile marker 18.  Opelousas Police arrived to find that a white, male, subject attempting to walk across the interstate was struck by an oncoming vehicle.  Traffic on Interstate 49 was temporarily detoured from the scene as Opelousas Investigators obtained and collected evidence.  A representative from the Coroner's Office also responded to the scene to aid in the investigation.  Information was obtained that the subject struck by the vehicle was from the Moss Bluff area and was temporarily residing at a local hotel for the night with relatives and friends.  Information was obtained that the victim was at a local night club and was walking back to the hotel.  Contact was made with the friends of the deceased in an attempt to confirm the identity of the victim.  Efforts are underway to make contact with the parents of the victim.  Due to the sensitivity of the case, the name of the victim will not be released at this time.  Anyone with additional information can contact the Opelousas Police Department at (337)948-2500 or visit the web at crimetips@opelousaspd.com.
