Update: Texas Brine Billed For Sinkhole

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE 10/26/12

BAYOU CORNE, La. (AP) - Assumption Parish officials have asked Texas Brine Co. of Houston to reimburse the parish for about $321,000 spent in its response to a sinkhole now believed to have been caused by the company's failed salt cavern.

The 5.5-acre sinkhole near Bayou Corne was found early Aug. 3, prompting a mandatory evacuation of 150 homes in the area. The evacuation remains in place.

The Advocate reports (http://bit.ly/RnbNDs ) parish officials and state agencies set up a command post in Bayou Corne to monitor and respond daily to changes in the sinkhole.

Officials say manpower costs, especially overtime, are mounting for the parish as the sheriff's office and parish police jury keep personnel stationed at the command post. Also, the sheriff has deputies monitoring evacuated areas 24 hours day.

officials told The Advocate (http://bit.ly/QQWp3v ) a portion of the sinkhole edge, about 50-foot-long went under Tuesday near pipeline corridors that run along the western edge of the slurry hole.

The sinkhole, which was found Aug. 3, is on Texas Brine Co. of Houston property south of La. 70 South between Grand Bayou and Bayou Corne. Parish officials evacuated 150 homes the day the sinkhole emerged. The evacuation remains in place.

Vent Wells Drilled Into Sinkhole

BAYOU CORNE, La. (AP) - The emergency preparedness director for Assumption Parish says wells are being dug to vent and investigate natural gas trapped beneath a community near a 4-acre sinkhole.

An unknown amount of gas is trapped below Bayou Corne. The water-bearing sands are under a layer of clay. John Boudreaux tells The Advocate (http://bit.ly/PMegVj) there are worries the gas might build up pressure under that clay.

He says contractors began driving casing on Saturday for three vent wells to get a better idea about what is happening underground.

He said crews also have begun installing underground devices called geoprobes to monitor gas levels.

Bayou Corne's 150 households have been evacuated since the sinkhole appeared Aug. 3. It is just off the edge of the Napoleonville Dome, a 1-mile-by-3-mile underground salt deposit.
