According to the Vermilion Parish Sheriff Office, at approximately 8:20 a.m. on October 5, 2012 the Sheriff's office was contacted in reference to a possible downed helicopter in the Intracoastal area.
After dispatching water patrol, ground units and fire/rescue personnel the wreckage of the downed helicopter was found approximately a quarter of a mile from the take off location.
A spokesperson for the Sheriff's Office only would confirm that a helicopter took off from a local heliport on a test flight with only the pilot on board. From all indications the helicopter went down approximately a quarter of a mile from the heliport site but at this time the reasons for the crash are unknown.
The Sheriff's Office is confirming one fatality, but would not comment on the name of the pilot until family members would be notified. The National Transportation Safety Board is enroute to the crash site at this time. Any other information gathered from the investigation will be disseminated as it becomes available to investigators.
