ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) - The Rapides Parish School Board may abolish the district's no retention policy for students in kindergarten through third grade.
After a lengthy discussion at this week's board meeting, the matter was sent to the Board's education committee for review.
The policy was put into place in 2006 by former Superintendent Gary Jones.
The motion to abolish the no-retention policy would include a mandate that requires a meeting between the teacher, parent or guardian, principal and school leader before a child is retained.
The policy encourages no retention for students before fourth grade and was an effort to reduce the high school dropout rate.
