LPSS to Retain Attorney

Posted:

The Lafayette Parish School Board agreed Wednesday to hire an attorney to serve as special counsel to staff and the superintendent.

The firm Escamilla, Poneck, & Cruz, LLC of Monroe, Louisiana will be retained untill October 15th, 2012.

The last attorney hired was to assist superintendent Dr. Pat Cooper. Board member Mark Babineaux says employees should know what's correct and what's not. "I think upon hiring a person that they would have at least a working knowledge of what they're legally responsible to do and what they're legally responsible for avoiding," says Babineaux.

Board attorney James Simon agrees with Cooper. "So that they have one source of legal expertise that we can go to instead of having to have people from different areas," says Simon.

Board member Tommy Angelle wanted to know if it's "the same lawyer we're talking about from that firm out in Texas that's going to represent us?"
