Law enforcement officers teamed up with Lafayette Parish school officials for a safety drill at Lafayette High Monday. Officers searched belongings for drugs and weapons. School officials say the drill was also in response to recent activity reported by school staff and security.
Superintendent Doctor Pat Cooper says school safety is a growing issue, but not just in Lafayette.
"They're aware that we're concerned and we're gonna need their help."
The district will hold more drills throughout the parish this year. It's part of the "Safe Schools" initiative.
