New regulations for mobile home owners in Carencro seek to improve public safety and quality of life.
Carencro city manager Jay Castille says the new regulations are a revamping of the old ordinance already in place. Plus, new stipulations to address new residents. "Some of the trailers they were bringing in were in poor shape." Castille says mobile homes moving into Carencro must be less than 15 years old. Campers inside a park or on a lot can't be used as a residence. Every mobile home must have vented skirting.
"It's kind of ugly when you have no skirting; letting tall grass grow. So, we want the skirting in to hide all the plumbing pipes and all that stuff," says Castille. Elaine Richard is a Carencro resident and business owner.
Some of the new regulations don't sit well with her.
"I wouldn't want anyone telling me what color to do my house. So, why should people tell them what they have to do with their house."
Richard says she can see regulating where a mobile home is located within a city.
"It's unfortunate sometimes because some people don't take care of their property but for the most part that's part of our freedoms. We're losing a lot of our freedoms already I don't want to lose anymore."
Castille says utility services will be denied to any mobile home that falls out of compliance.
