St. John Deputy Killings Update

Posted:

One of seven suspects was in court Wednesday to face charges in the murder of two Saint John Parish Deputies.

Kyle Joekel is charged with two counts of first degree murder. WWLTV says he was given a court appointed lawyer at a pre-trial hearing.

Authorities say Joekel was part of an ambush style attack in August.  Deputies Brandon Nielsen and Jeremy Triche were shot and killed.

Joekel could face the death penalty.

Bells chimed and flags flew at half staff for deputy Brandon Nielsen Wednesday. The second deputy shot and killed in LaPlace last Thursday.

Nielsen was buried while loved ones, law enforcement and hundreds more paid their final respects today.  Services began Wednesday morning.

The 34-year-old deputy was a father of five. Services began in LaPlace and ended with a motorcade that made its way to Metairie. Governor Bobby Jindal was also in attendance.

Meanwhile, two deputies also wounded that day continue to recover.

Sheriff: 2 wounded deputies continue to recover

EDGARD, La. (AP) - St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff Mike Tregre says two deputies remain hospitalized while recovering from shootings that killed two other deputies.

He says 33-year-old Deputy Michael Scott Boyington underwent scheduled surgery Tuesday, and both he and 30-year-old Deputy Jason Triche continue to improve.

Tregre says doctors don't yet know when either will be released.

Boyington, a sheriff's office narcotics investigator, was shot Thursday at a parking lot where he was working off-duty as a guard.

Triche, 27-year-old Deputy Jeremy Triche, of LaPlace, and 34-year-old Deputy Brandon Nielsen, of Destrehan, were shot at a trailer park where they went to investigate Boyington's shooting.

Nielsen will be buried Wednesday. Jeremy Triche was buried Monday, which would have been his 28th birthday.

Six suspects have been arrested; a seventh remains hospitalized.

Overflow Crowd at Mass for Deputy Jeremy Triche

LAPLACE, La. (AP)- An overflow crowd of relatives, friends and law enforcement officers have gathered at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, where a Mass is being celebrated in honor of St. John the Baptist Parish sheriff's Deputy Jeremy Triche.

The 27-year-old from LaPlace was shot and killed along with Deputy Brandon Nielsen, a 34-year-old Destrehan resident, on Thursday while investigating the shooting of another deputy who was wounded while working a traffic detail at the Valero refinery.

Seven people have been arrested for the shootings.

The Times-Picayune reports several people, including patients at the Twin Oaks Nursing Home, came out Monday to watch the procession of uniformed officers file pass en route to the church. One nursing home employee says they did so as a show of support.
