Army Suicide Rate Hits All-Time High in July

Posted:

There's some disturbing news about suicide and the U.S. Army. Military officials reported Thursday there were 38 confirmed or suspected soldier suicides in July.

That's the highest monthly count since the Army began keeping detailed statistics. The number includes active and non-active duty soldiers in the Army National Guard and Reserve. So far in 2012, the Army has confirmed 120 suicides.

Last month, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta told a Congressional committee the U.S. military was facing an "epidemic" of suicides. And he said it was in need of improvements in mental health services for active duty and returning troops.
