Some residents in rural Vermilion Parish have said yes to the proposed expansion one of Louisiana's fastest growing communities.
A petition signed and approved by over 51 percent of residents in parts of the unincorporated areas of Vermilion Parish gave the Village of Maurice the okay to expand its city limits south on Highway 167 and east on Highway 92, by almost a mile and a half each way. New residents of the village will now be patrolled by the Maurice police department.
They will also benefit from lower home insurance thanks to a better fire rating, have a voice in village government, by attending council meetings. And will pay a higher property tax.
Despite the increase in city limits, the mayor says there will be no new hires to the village maintenance department or police department until things have been assessed. The expansion of the city limits took effect July first.
