
Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office Investigators are looking into the circumstances surrounding the death of a parish inmate at the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center. Deputies assigned to the facility discovered the inmate during a wellness check hanging in her cell around 2:48 PM Thursday. Resuscitation efforts by LPSO staff members and responding paramedics were unsuccessful.
Lelia Shelvin, 51-years-old from Lafayette was pronounced dead by the Parish Coroner at LPCC. Shelvin was being held after an arrest at approximately 1:16 AM on August 9, 2012 for an outstanding warrant for Aggravated Battery with a Dangerous Weapon by the Lafayette Police Department.
The matter is being investigated by the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office Internal Affairs Unit and the Criminal Investigation Department.
