St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert reminds motorists to be mindful of school busses and school zones as students and teachers return from the summer break.
School resumes August 8, 2012. As teachers, students, and parents make final preparations for the new school year, Sheriff Mark Hebert reminds motorists to be mindful of school busses ferrying students and school zones that will be in effect.
According to state law vehicles are required to stop no less than 30 feet from a school bus that is picking up or dropping off students along a bus route. School busses activate visual signals such as lights or stop signs to let other vehicles know the bus is stopping.
Vehicles may not proceed until the school bus resumes motion. Drivers are reminded to adhere to the posted speed limit in school zones. Also, vehicles are not allowed to pass in a school zone when the zone is in effect.
St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert wishes everyone a safe and productive school year.
