The New Orleans Saints opened training camp on Tuesday. Amid all the turmoil during the off-season, the attitude coming out of Metairie is positive. Interim Head Coach Joe Vitt, Quarterback Drew Brees, and Safety Roman Harper met with the media, and the overwhelming message from all three of those guys: we're motivated!
Brees, who recently signed the biggest contract in NFL history, paying him 100 million dollars over five years, says the key to a successful season is for him to just be himself.
"It's not pressure,'' Brees said. "It's a sense of responsibility. I'm careful not to put that extra pressure on myself. There might be plenty of reasons where that would be easy to do. In all circumstances - Sean (Payton) not being here, me not being here during the offseason, the contract, all that stuff.
"The fact is I just need to be me.''
And that will be just fine with Saints Fans. Brees is coming off a record setting year, but says more so than topping the records, he wants this team to be better: records or not!
"I want to be a little bit better this year than I was the year before. You can't always measure that with statistics."
One thing is for certain, Brees being in camp will only help the Saints as they prepare for the 1st pre-season game against the Cardinals in the Hall of Fame Game on August 5th.
