Some residents and city officials in the Acadia Parish community of Rayne are joining forces to try and prevent a waste water injection well from being drilled in their area. Thursday night residents gathered to discuss the controversial project and what they can do to stop it.
Last year, Tank Branch LLC filed for a permit with the state to drill and operate a commercial injection well for commercial waste. Plans called for the site to be located north of Rayne. But last Monday, the Rayne City Council voiced its opposition to such a facility being operated in its back yard.
Mayor Jim Petitjean, says he fears the well could have a devastating impact on his community "We own a municipal water system. The Chicot Aquifer provides the water to over eight thousand citizens in Rayne and normally when things go bad for these sites (injection waste facility), it's going to go downhill and were downhill from the site".
