LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - A public forum has been scheduled to discuss the pros and cons of a ban on smoking in bars in Lafayette.
The Advocate reports that the June 12 forum is being organized by City-Parish Councilman Kenneth Boudreaux.
Boudreaux said he is not proposing a ban at this time but rather wants to hear from groups on both sides of the issue - those advocating a smoking ban and bar owners or smokers who might oppose it.
"What direction we go from here is really hard to say," Boudreaux said.
The only local ban on smoking in bars in Louisiana is in Alexandria, but a similar ban is being considered in Natchitoches.
State law bans smoking in most businesses, but there is an exception for bars and gambling establishments.
