The US Food and Drug administration announced that Natural Balance Pet Foods have issued a voluntary recall of some of their dry dog food because they may be contaminated with Salmonella. The food was manufactured at Diamond Pet Foods, which has had an ongoing recall of dog food products since April 2012.
Louisiana is one of the states included in the Natural Balance Pet Food Recall, although Louisiana retailers do not receive pet food shipments from the Diamond Pet Food plant in Gaston, South Carolina, which has been implicated in the salmonella outbreak. The company said that they have not received any reports of pets being ill from eating the food. Out of extreme caution, the company decided to recall the dog food.
Not all of the pet food is being recalled – only the ones listed with the matching codes and dates. See below for the Natural Balance Dog Food recall list. The Natural Balance Sweet Potato & Venison Dog, Natural Balance Lamb Meal & Brown Rice Dog, Natural Balance Vegetarian Dog, and Natural Balance Sweet Potato & Bison Dog brands have been named in this recall in various sized packages.
Pet owners who have the recalled product should dispose of it safely. Pets could become ill from eating the food. Humans can become infected from handling the dog food, so make sure to wash hands well afterwards.
